Volunteer Teams
Recollections:
Sharing Your Story
Recollections is a recorded storytelling service, like StoryCorps or The Moth, but offered by and for South Shore residents. A volunteer interviewer, skilled in the gentle art and practice of oral history, sits with a storyteller who wants to share their story. An iPhone and blue-tooth microphone records a 45-minute conversation, made available to the storyteller via a private YouTube channel. This unique heirloom can be shared as the storyteller wishes. This service is available to all at no cost.
Anyone and everyone has a story to tell! A grandparent thinking of their grandkids; a retiring teacher or nurse thinking back on their career; someone in recovery who believes their story might be helpful to others. What’s your story?
M+ volunteers provide this service on the second Wednesday monthly at Cohasset Elder Affairs, the third Tuesday monthly at Second Congregational Church Cohasset, and in a storyteller’s home, upon request. Please contact us if you’d like to share and record your story.
We also welcome new volunteer team members! Anyone can learn how to interview and record. Our team meets the first Tuesday each month at Second Congregational Church Cohasset. It’s a joy and privilege to connect with others through the intentional sharing and recording of stories.
Companionship & Respite
Neighbors helping neighbors. People who need support connecting with people who can give support. We need each other and we’re not alone!
M+ Companionship and Respite Volunteers are trained and available to support South Shore residents with a variety of psychosocial needs, and volunteers can visit weekly or as needed:
Company and socialization, someone with whom to take a walk, play a game, read aloud, watch TV – helpful for people in residence at skilled-nursing, assisted, and independent living communities, and for people at home coping with loss of independence
Respite support for caregivers – helpful for anyone managing the care of a loved one, anyone looking for a caring and responsible person to stay and be present while you step-away for self-care or for an appointment
Legacy projects like letter writing, photo organizing, storytelling – helpful for people engaging in advanced-care planning or thinking about end-of-life
Supportive conversation – helpful for people grieving the loss of a loved one or going through a challenging time
“I really enjoy conducting the interviews and I’m fascinated by people’s stories. And as an added bonus, I get to work on enhancing my active listening skills.”
— Debi from Hingham
