Mindful Reading Workshop
Mindful Reading is a Workshop offered to the Hull and South Shore Communities, a collaboration between Mindfulness Plus and the Hull Public Library. This Workshop takes place in two sessions, Saturday April 26th and Saturday May 3, 10:30-12:00, at the Hull Public Library. The workshop is offered to the community at no-cost and advanced registration is required. To register, go to Hull Library Events Calendar.
Mindful Reading invites participants to read and share with others in a new kind of communal exploration. Participants will read a text in advance – “Sisterhood — An Order of Nuns is Befriending Women on Death Row” (by Lawrence Wright, from the New Yorker, 2/17/25 issue). In Session One, we will read aloud excerpts from the article that caught our attention. We will share observations and questions that emerge from hearing the text aloud. We won’t presume, in advance, what the “right” or best questions are, in the manner of a book club or academic class. We will allow our communal conversation to reveal what questions we each bring to the text, and what questions the text might ask of us.
When: Saturday April 26th and Saturday May 3, 10:30-12:00
Where: Hull Public Library
In Session Two, we will consider the questions that arose in our first session. We will mindfully pay attention to what is at stake, for each of us, as we think about a particular reality (the death penalty) and as we consider the lives of people directly affected by this reality. We will approach our conversation with great care as we encounter challenging observations and questions. We won’t avoid whatever might “trigger” us. We will use mindfulness practice to carefully attend to whatever comes up in each participant’s reading, and in whatever differences might emerge in group conversation.
We live in a time when it feels difficult, if not impossible, to talk and connect across differences, social and political differences especially. With so much grabbing our attention, it’s hard to read with depth and intention. Mindful Reading offers an opportunity to both read meaningfully and engage each other responsibly, about the questions that matter.
